Effects of collisions and interactions on star formation in galaxy pairs in the field

چکیده
By using cosmological simulations, we studied the effects of galaxy interactions on the star formation activity in the local Universe. We selected galaxy pairs from the 3D galaxy distribution according to a proximity criterion. The 2D galaxy catalog was constructed by projecting the 3D total galaxy distribution and then selecting projected galaxy pairs. The analysis of the 3D galaxy pair catalog showed that an enhancement of the star formation activity can be statistically correlated with proximity. The projected galaxy pairs exhibited a similar trend with projected distances and relative radial velocities. However, the star formation enhancement signal is diminished with respect to that of the 3D galaxy pair catalog owing to projection effects and spurious galaxy pairs. Overall, we found that hierarchical scenarios reproduced the observational dependence of star formation activity in pairs on orbital parameters and environment. We also found that geometrical effects due to projection modify the trends more severely than those introduced by spurious pairs.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملMinor Galaxy Interactions : Star Formation Rates and Galaxy Properties
We study star formation in a sample of 1204 galaxies in minor (|∆mz| ≥ 2) pairs and compact groups, drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5). We analyze an analogous sample of 2409 galaxies in major (|∆mz| < 2) pairs and compact groups to ensure that our selection reproduces previous results, and we use a “field” sample of 65,570 galaxies for comparison. Our major and m...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملStar formation efficiency in galaxy interactions and mergers: a statistical study
We investigate the enhancement of star formation efficiency in galaxy interactions and mergers, by numerical simulations of several hundred galaxy collisions. All morphological types along the Hubble sequence are considered in the initial conditions of the two colliding galaxies, with varying bulge-to-disk ratios and gas mass fractions. Different types of orbits are simulated, direct and retrog...
متن کاملCollision Induced Galaxy Formation
We present a semi-analytical model in which galaxy collisions and strong tidal interactions, both in the field and during the collapse phase of groups and clusters help determine galaxy morphology. From a semi-analytical analysis based on simulation results of tidal collisions (Aguilar & White 1985), we propose simple rules for energy exchanges during collisions that allow to discriminate betwe...
